Digg!

It is truly a daunting task to rise above the glut of singers with guitars draped off their shoulder.

I absolutely love EPs. Most of the time, you get the best of an artist without the wanderings and unfinished thoughts.

Not so with the Ten Tiny Little Pieces EP from Martha Berner. Although the title track is a beautifully written hurt-wrench of a song which finds Berner delivering the best performance I've ever heard from her, it doesn't save Ten Tiny Little Pieces from the lack of production ideas or poor choices in material that follow with the remaining three tracks. Berner made an incredibly bad decision in choosing to cover Velvet Underground and Nico's "Sunday Morning"; she sounds as if she's being forced against her will to sing. "Down and Out in San Francisco" and "Wait for Me" are much better performances, but the bland production leaves the songs stale and sounding like every other bedroom singer-songwriter in the world.

It is truly a daunting task to rise above the glut of singers with guitars draped off their shoulder. There was a glimmer of hope with Ten Tiny Little Pieces, but one remarkable song can't save the mediocrity throughout. C | Jeffrey Smith

Yeah Jeff,
Now I wanna go out and buy it. I'm sure she's great. Really. I'm not bullshitting about the EP. You're such an astute and clever fellow. Someday if I study real hard, maybe I'll be as wonderful a writer as you. Get yourself a Victrola, a stack of Charlie Daniels albums, and learn how to use a semi-colon.
Sincerely,

Chris Buttleman / Machine Reco - Martha Berner ep review IP:69.215.147.103 | 2007-03-03 14:34:21
They say that those who can, do, and those that can't, criticize. Former artist and current PR man and "critic" Jeffrey Smith is no stranger to mediocrity.

To provide some disclosure, last year I hired Jeffrey Smith to do press for Martha Berner's debut album after he told me how "amazing" she was. It should be apparent by the above review, that Jeffrey didn't get the gig to work Martha's new EP.

Also, I'm the one who produced Martha's latest CD and that's why I suspect that our astute evaluator took aim at the lack of production value.

A professional would have chosen not to review this release with such an obvious, personal conflict of interest. Especially with so many new releases to choose from.

A writer with caliber may have pointed out that the disc was recorded live in the studio in a single day and that the artist (who he knows), does more than "drape a guitar on her shoulder", but she plays harmonica as well as cornet which alone sets her apart from the "glut" to some extent.

Anyone who would like to judge Martha's new offering themselves, should visit her MySpace page (www.myspace.com/martha berner) for a free download, more reviews and a sampling from the EP. Or tune into XM satellite radio channels XM Cafe, The Loft and/or The Village where the discerning ears of the programming department are currently spinning both Sunday Morning and Wait for Me, two of the songs assailed by the dubious "publicist" in above critique.

I need to address the comment by Chris Buttleman from Machine Records. First, it is true that I assisted Machine Records for a brief period on Martha’s This Side Of Yesterday release as well as a release by some friends of mine called The Apparitions. However, I was not approached, nor have I attempted to go after work from Machine Records since assisting them with those releases. Mr. Buttleman is very aware of the reason for why I have not approached Machine Records since I assisted them with Martha and The Apparitions.

I informed editor Laura Hamlett that I had worked with Martha and that the review was not pleasant. She made the decision to post said review. I have absolutely no reason to bear ill will toward Martha or Machine Records. I’m a fan of Martha and her work as a whole, but I stand by my opinion of her recent EP regardless of my history with the artist and her record label. I had felt that my relationship with everyone at Machine Records was in good standing and did not feel uncomfortable with my opinion of Ten Tiny Little Pieces.

As far as the bit of personal attacks from Mr. Buttleman… I appreciate those greatly sir. If you would like to discuss this any further you have my email address and cell number.

As a personal note to Martha… I absolutely love the song Ten Tiny Little Pieces! If I see you at SXSW, beer is on me.

jeff,
It becomes abundantly clear from reading Mr. Buttleman's account concerning Martha Berner's EP that you obviously have what any objective observer would call "a conflict of interest." One can see that you are a very embittered individual and that the music critic thing is something that you should reconsider as a viable profession/avocation. This is also quite clear with regard to the hatchet job that you did on my own album "Audio Postcard." Your narrow critical framework and lack of knowledge concerning tuning should disqualify you from writing about any but the most provincial musical endeavors. Would love to trade cd's with Ms. Berner if she wants to do that. By the way, jeff, in your hatchet piece, your line "the songs wander" is what's called an independent clause, and it's followed by another independent clause. Therefore, a semi-colon should separate them. Normally, I wouldn't care, but you seem so intent on following established rules i.e. rules of tuning. Can't have it both ways, jeff. You want to be a hatchet man without the required chops. Study hard and take some anger managemment courses too.
Sincerely,
Nick Smith ndonaldsmith@yahoo.com
