Part Shirley Manson, part Courtney Love, with hints of Karen O and PJ Harvey, Round comes into a world dominated by men.
To be blunt, the best part of Carina Round's Slow Motion Addict comes in the first four seconds. I thought the catchy deep female vocals that start off the album would set off an exciting ride of female-driven rock the likes of which we don't hear enough of...but I was mistaken.
Part Shirley Manson, part Courtney Love, with hints of Karen O and PJ Harvey, Round comes into a world dominated by men. Once there, she doesn't do much for our movement, mainly because she's not bringing anything new to the table. The aforementioned women have a clear influence in different parts of Slow Motion Addict.
But hey, if you're gonna copy someone, might as well be someone worth copying, right? Round's taken from the greats, which brings out a dynamic sound that's as edgy as it is industrial pop.
Slow Motion Addict is a dark and dirty album driven by emotions that run the gamut of-what else?-PMS. It's a fickle album to enjoy as a whole, but bits and pieces are enjoyable and intelligent.
