There is a lot going on within the eleven songs on Homunculus’ Words. A wide range of styles, a lot of different influences and some very cool instrumentation. So much so that it’s hard to put your finger on what it is that makes it work so well. But work well it does and all of these myriad pieces are interwoven into what amounts to a great body of work. Words is a CD that quite literally, gets better as it goes along and better still upon repeated listening, if only for the strangeness of what they’ve put together. For example, the opening track, “Here and There” marries the guitar jangle of dB’s with vocals that sound a bit like Ken Stringfellow fronting the Association, whereas “Deep South Beach” has a decidedly ’70s vibe with all the cowbell Christopher Walken could ever want. Homunculus continue to keep you on your toes with “Time in a Can.” The opening guitar hints at a slightly twisted take on the Jim Croce classic, but then veers into a much jazzier groove leaving you with the impression the title is mere coincidence. The highlight of Words, however, is its bonus track closer, “Okay.” A song with beautiful walking guitar and great lyrics that is enough to make you go out and buy a convertible simply just to listen to it with the top down on a sunny day.
