Digg!

This particular group gets so much sound out of their stage show that it’s hard to believe they only have three members.

February 12, 2005: It was six degrees in St. Missouri. It was six degrees and my thoughts were not to stay in that night and my thoughts were not to throw a log on the fire, but to hear some rock. Perhaps after going outside to the car and feeling the blast of freezing air, I would have reconsidered, especially if it had been to see a band I was only mildly interested in. But this was a night the Trip Daddy’s were playing, and that’s what I was in the mood for. A lot of other people in St. Louis feel the same way about this local group. And there are plenty of good reasons why.

The Trip-Daddys play a great mix of rockabilly, punk, and rock ’n’ roll complete with spectacular live shows, appealing songs, and a full supply of great guitar work. This particular group gets so much sound out of their stage show that it’s hard to believe they only have three members. It’s no wonder the band decided to make a CD based on one of their gigs at the Way Out Club.

The Trip-Daddys are fronted by singer/guitarist Craig Straubinger, one of the truly great guitar players on the local music scene. Bassist Jamey Almond sings lead vocals on a few songs, one being the great “Doublewide.” For his part, Joe Meyer plays great drums. On this particular night at the Way Out Club, the band played all of its best tunes, from “Festus Bound” to “Doublewide” to the catchy “As Long as It Rocks.” Straubinger puts everything he has into his lead guitar solos, tearing through song after song and solo after solo with confidence. The drums and bass are solid throughout; Almond’s voice sounds better than ever.

Shots of the audience are interspersed with those of the band, further capturing the feel of the gig. The Trip Daddys have always been interactive with their audience, and it shows. The crowd can get so involved at times, they become an important part of the show, clapping along or moving to the catchy songs.

Also on the DVD, and certainly well worth treasuring, is a performance of “The Way She Wiggles,” taken from a gig at The Pageant and featuring drummer Dave Easley.
