And with a set of piercing green eyes and scruffy, dirty-blonde hair, it’s hard not to succumb to this musician’s irresistible charm. That is, if you’re not already enticed by his mad skills as a multi-instrumentalist.
The name Sean Watkins may sound familiar. Unfortunately, it seems that when your claim to fame is being “that other guy” in the Chris Thile–fronted trio Nickel Creek, it’s pretty easy to get overlooked. But as it turns out, “that other guy” is pretty damn talented, and Watkins has more than proved himself with Blinders On.
The album, which is actually Watkins’ third solo release, not only shows off his roots in bluegrass, but also reveals a softer, singer-songwriter side. And with a set of piercing green eyes and scruffy, dirty-blonde hair, it’s hard not to succumb to this musician’s irresistible charm. That is, if you’re not already enticed by his mad skills as a multi-instrumentalist. Blinders On features Watkins playing acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, piano, keyboard, mandolin, and even a toy xylophone, in addition to drum samplers. The album also has guest appearances by his sister Sara (“the chick” from Nickel Creek) and other musicians. You’ll notice a heavy emphasis on stringed instruments. There’s even a glimpse of Watkins as a composer, with a 20-second sample from his string quartet “Cammac.”
The music itself clearly draws influence from the jazz and classical traditions, and is at times quite noticeably different from Watkins’ work with Nickel Creek. As a whole, the album varies stylistically. You’ll find both complicated and simple harmonies, and a spectrum of strictly acoustic tracks to more produced, electric ones. But Watkins’ gentle, soothing voice singing his beautiful melodies with inspired lyrics remains consistent throughout. The addition of piano to some of the more acoustic tracks is especially effective, such as the heartbreaking, “Run Away Girl,” in which Watkins sings, “Please try not to laugh/it only makes me want you more/we both know this could never be/but I can’t let you go.” Watkins exposes the beauty of music with a perfect blend of complexity, simplicity, and musicianship.
