With her blonde hair, black leather, and full-sleeve tattoos, Theo Kogan’s punk-rock pose on the cover of her latest album dares you not to buy it. The flaxen-haired former frontwoman for the flagrantly foul-mouthed, fully female Lunachicks formed her new band, the Skyscrapers, as the new wave answer to her old band’s gross-out punk. The results sound remarkably like fellow new wave revivalists theSTART, only Kogan’s vocals are a little more Debbie Harry and a lot less Gwen Stefani. Their self-titled debut is solid from start to finish; not every song is remarkable, but then none of them are bad, either. With nary a weak track to be found and plenty of strong ones (the driving “Say It Again,” the punk rock swing of “Lay ’Em Out,” and the flat-out perfect “Broken Girl”) make this not necessarily required listening, but certainly enjoyable.
