Bitter:Sweet is an electronic pop band hailing from the City of Angels. I use that reference because the group’s vocalist, Shana Halligan, has a voice that is positively angelic. Bitter:Sweet’s sound is in the same vein as Portishead with a heavy dose of ’70s Vegas cabaret. The album’s hypnotic title track made me want to slink around every corner of my house a lá James Bond. Kiran Shahani’s instrumentals are well thought-out and sublime enough to allow Halligan’s breathy vocals to take center stage. Extra shagadelic points are given for the correct use of a harp.
