This morning was the press screening of the new Gus Van Sant film, Paranoid
Park, which is about a young
skateboarder who accidentally kills a security guard and then decides not to
tell anyone. As it sounds, the film plays very much like how Van Sant tackling
a Larry Clark movie would be.

Although this year’s festival has so far perhaps been better to me both
in terms of films and experiences than any other festival I’ve ever been to, it
is dispiriting when you see five films in a day and four of them are
disappointing, boring, or outright bad.

I've long thought
that Moore is a great filmmaker but a questionable
political thinker, but that doesn't keep me from looking forward to his films
(I didn't care for Fahrenheit 9/11,
but have thoroughly enjoyed all of his other films so far). Sicko is a very good and very important
film, easily of the caliber of Bowling
for Columbine, but I think that it will lose a lot of its intended effect
having come from Moore and not someone else; he just has too much baggage these
days.

This is the sort of movie that
hardcore, longtime Joy Division fans will probably both love and hate—it’s a
great tribute to a great band (and a great film in and of itself), but it’s
actually so good that it will likely bring a lot of wienerish masses into
getting into Joy Division and acting like they have been all along. Get ready
for them to become popular again.

Seeing as how I am a fan of all
three of these filmmakers, and also since for once I am trying to see less
movies than I have in years past (so I don’t, you know, die), it seemed worth
it to at least send of the request and await the inevitable rejection (note
that just because I received the invitation to request an interview by no means
means that I will actually get said interview).

As of this writing, Snow Angels has yet to be picked up for theatrical distribution in the United States, which makes me sad for the state of American cinema.

I can now tell people that I have seen a film with MC Hammer.

While We Are the Strange doesn't really look like anything you've ever seen before, it doesn't really work, and Strange doesn't use his innovations as the means to any sort of end. It feels like what it would be like if Henry Selick and Jonas Akerlund collaborated on an Insane Clown Posse music video, if that gives you an idea.

In the Shadow of the Moon is a documentary about all of the men who made it to the moon, what the political climate was like at the time, etc. Also, it features never-before-seen footage of the moon and what the Earth looks like from its surface. Why don't they teach this stuff in school?

As it turns out, Waitress was selected for Sundance mere days before Adrienne Shelly died, and it was sold because, well, it's really solid. There's nothing too groundbreaking here (it's about a small-town pie waitress (played by Keri Russell) who has an affair and wants to get away from her abusive husband), but it's well made and thoroughly entertaining and well cast and funny.

I don't follow the trades as closely as I probably should when I'm at Sundance and don't really know the ins and outs of buying and selling films at the market here, so I probably should shut up.

I've found that if I put Chapstick on right before I leave the lodge to walk to the theaters in the morning, it freezes on the outside of my lips, so when I arrive it looks like I'm wearing white lipstick. After a few minutes inside, it melts down and is no longer a problem.
