Forgive me for the comparison but “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” may someday be considered Cage the Elephant’s equivalent of Radiohead’s “Creep.”

The Pageant, St. Louis

Still in the “up and comers” category, Cage the Elephant thanked the nearly sold-out Pageant crowd in St. Louis on Thursday night. Last June when the band came through town, they sold the place out; however, the balcony wasn’t open. This time it was full as well (though mostly just with seat-filling parents).

Nevertheless, the band was grateful for the energetic crowd, and it showed. Lead singer Matt Schultz was in the crowd nearly every third song or so with no reservation. His usual playfulness was spot on as always, from faking the crowd out on numerous near-stage dives, to hiding behind the curtains on the side of the stage.

Rhythm guitar player Brad Schultz also took to the front of the stage often in what seem to be fits of passion for the music and lyrics, often shouting them. As Schultz sings on “In One Ear,” “I’m only playing music cuz you know I fucking love it.”

Please, music gods, forgive me for the comparison, but “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” may someday be considered Cage the Elephant’s equivalent of Radiohead’s “Creep.” In comparison to the rest of a rather raucous set, the band’s first radio success came across as forced and by the books; in the future, the band shouldn’t feel obligated to include it in the set.

Most of the set did feel rather familiar, as Cage the Elephant has been playing these new songs for its last two tours; however, the crowd greatly appreciated knowing the lyrics this time, and frequently sang them loudly.

When the band pulled out slower tunes like “Flow” and set closer “Shiver,” the crowd remained mostly quiet, only raising their voices as they supportively sang along. The band put it best via Twitter the next morning,: “St. Louis was AMAZING!!!!!! SERIOUSLY ONE OF THE BEST CROWDS EVER!!!!!! all the other cities on the tour have some seriously competition ;)” We winky face them as well, especially if they bring back The Black Keys on that summer tour…wink wink. | Bruce Matlock
