For this week’s Throwback Thursday, I bring you How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey have done a plethora of movies together over the years, but I maintain that How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is their best joint effort.

“How To…” columnist Andie Anderson (Hudson) agrees to get a man to fall for her and then drive him away in 10 days. Benjamin Barry (McConaughey) makes a bet that he can make any woman fall in love with him in 10 days. The two meet, and the results are hilariously awful—and wonderful.

Hudson and McConaughey are a perfect pair—their chemistry is unmatched, and they’re also equals in acting ability, humor, and attractiveness, so neither of them outshines the other. Every single scene in this film is comical—there are no badly timed jokes or over-the-top actions that don’t work.

This film is one of those that holds the “chick-flick” label, but it’s also great for guys. Hudson and McConaughey have equal amounts of screen time, and the story is about the two characters together, rather than the girl whose life becomes complete when the guy joins it. It’s more than a love story, it explores the ins-and-outs of what makes a relationship work—what guys want, what girls want, and the tactics that each side takes to make those desires reality. This battle of the sexes story is perfect for date night.

I also love How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days because of its re-watchability. There’s a difference between movies we like and movies that are good. There are lots of great movies that only work to see once, and lots of bad movies that we watch again for a good laugh. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is a great film you can watch over and over, because knowing what happens next doesn’t diminish the humor. | Samantha LaBat
