Five for Friday | 12.16.16

I’m not sure if it is the power-pop vibe or John Davis’s sublime vocals, but this track rocked its way into my heart.

I write this weekly column to free you from the shackles of mainstream radio. Please check out the link below to my own curated Spotify station called “Five for Friday” in which I put all of these jams and several more. With updates every Friday, you can be on the cutting edge of the new music world. Get into it.

Title Tracks: “I Don’t Need To Know” | I’m not sure if it is the power-pop vibe or John Davis’s sublime vocals, but this track rocked its way into my heart. The vibe is The Monkees meets The Lemonheads…highlighting fabulous rhythms and those golden, almost hypnotic vocals.

Pusher f/Push Push: “Shake Down” | I have to admit, this track makes me feel badass and relevant. The vocals remind me of Peaches and the electronic beats are super dope. I love the edgy, explicit lyrics and the whole “don’t fuck with me” attitude. If I had a crew (or a squad), this is the jam to which we would roll.

Elephante f/MIIA: “Dynasty” | MIIA is a vocalist from Oslo, Norway, who’s as physically gorgeous as her vocals. The marriage between MIIA and progressive house artist Elephante is one made in musical heaven. I put this track on and dance in my kitchen like nobody’s watching.

Girl Blue: “Drunk” | Arielle O’Keefe—aka Girl Blue—appears to be designed perfectly for my musical palette. Her vocals are sultry, passionate, blues-rock driven, and insanely genuine. Couple that with her Hendrix-esque guitar skills and I am instantly hooked. This is one of those artists who will go on my “Must See Live” bucket list.

AJR: “Turning Out” | As a music reviewer, unpretentious bands speak to me on a deep spiritual level. The heartfelt lyrics and uncomplicated music on this track made my soul sing, and even forced me to crack a smile. The small giggle in Jack Met’s vocals is enough to make me an instant fan. | Jim Ryan
