Hello, you new music adventurers! I have been combing all the new releases for the past week. Here are five surefire gems to make you smile.

B-Movie: “Corridors” | While B-Movie might not be categorized Dark Wave, I love the dark tones of the vocals and the synths in this rocker. Due to their retro New Wave sound, I am instantly transported back to my late teens, when I combed my hair all over to one side—a lá Flock of Seagulls—and carried around a skateboard to look cool. Is Dark Wave on the rise once again?

Tonight Alive: “Oxygen” | I am always on the lookout for new music for my local drag queens, and this one checks off all the boxes: sweeping pop vocals, slow-motion music, and engaging lyrics. I want to call the vibe of this song positive emo. This group needs mainstream radio airplay ASAP. Also, they get 10 extra cool points just because they are from Australia.

The Treatment: “Cry Tough” | Hold on for dear life when you listen to this track. Full of adrenaline and energy, “Cry Tough” is a face-melter. This is how I like my metal: a ballsy tight rhythm section, melodic vocals, and a killer lead guitar. The guitar solo on this track actually caused me to perform some pretty nifty air guitar moves; I think I could go pro.

She Is We: “Blue” | Soft and sensitive vocals are mixed with a hard-rocking chorus, producing a very sublime track. This has all the elements of mainstream pop radio, but with a surprising hard edge. Rachel Taylor is a very talented singer with some intoxicating, hypnotic vocals.

Gavin James: “Bitter Pill” | Ooh—Gavin James gives me all the sexy feels. His vocals are overflowing with emotion as he sings about sexy things played over very sexy music. Much as in the same vein of Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran, James serves emotional realness mixed with blue-eyed soul. Not to mention the fact that he is from Ireland…which makes him even more sexy.

Check out Five for Friday each and every week, as I will keep kicking out the jams! | Jim Ryan
