FRANZ NICOLAY is that dapper, mustachioed multi-instrumentalist and man-about-town you’ve seen with such groups as The Hold Steady and World/Inferno Friendship Society. On his debut solo album, Major General (out January 13th via Fistolo Records), he steps up to the spotlight with a melodramatic grab-bag of full-throated songs, stories, and days of wine & roses; shamelessly strident, stentorian and more than a little sentimental.

FRANZ NICOLAY unveiled the first MP3 from Major General today.  The track is titled "World/Inferno vs. the End of the Evening," a song which FRANZ describes as "a song about how no matter how much you will against it – the party winds down, the gang grows up, the credits roll, the house lights and the sun comes up.  I was going to call it ‘Punk Rock, I Gave You the Best Years Of My Life’ but that’s not true."  The track features the Major General band – FRANZ NICOLAY, Brian Viglione (Dresden Dolls), Yula Be’eri (ex-World/Inferno), and Jared Scott (Demander). The track also features guest appearances by Pinky Weitzman (Not Waving But Drowning), Margaret White (who’s done strings for Belle & Sebastian and Jennifer O’connor) and Hubert Chen on strings as well as backing vocals by two New York area singer/songwriters, Emilyn Brodsky and Anthony Da Costa.  You can download "World/Inferno vs. the End of the Evening" here and preorder Major General at Fistolo’s site here.

NICOLAY has solo tour dates planned for January, including a CD release show in New York City.  Some dates will be supported by Mischief Brew, the Folk Punk outfit from Erik Petersen who runs Fistolo Records along with the help of his wife, Denise Vertucci, and a small army of rescued pugs.  FRANZ is planning additional solo touring that will lead up to SXSW performances during a break from The Hold Steady’s busy schedule on the road.  He points out that the "old archetype of the musician is the traveling troubadour or vaudevillian, who can get up on any stage in any town and entertain some strangers," adding, "so I figure it’s time for me to strap an accordion on my back, pick up the banjo and go prove that if everything else falls apart I can always hit the road."
