Weekly Preview | 06.26.06

I've decided to start something new: a weekly list of editor's picks. What shows you've really got to see, and why. Sometimes they'll be PLAYBACK:stl-sponsored shows, which often means we booked 'em and we love 'em. Sometimes they'll just be amazing bands you shouldn't miss. In any event, welcome… Got your calendar handy?

Wed., 06.28 | Helen Stellar @ Cicero's

Yep, we booked it. Yep, we're beside ourselves with happiness. It's been something like four years since we first discovered this Chicago shoegazer trio, thanks to the wonder that is Nic Harcourt's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" show on KCRW. We've been trying to catch 'em live for years, and are thrilled to be able to bring them to St. Louis. If you're a fan of British music in any way, shape, or form, you'll love Helen Stellar. | $6, all ages, 8:30 p.m.

Tues., 06.27 | Semi-Precious-Weapons @ Cicero's

I reviewed this Brooklyn garage-glam band's EP a few months back and loved it. It's fun, it's cheeky, it's in-your-face…everything a good glam band is supposed to be. Let's face it, St. Louis: These opportunities don't come along often enough. This promises to be the show everyone's talking about at the record store tomorrow; don't miss it. | $5, all ages, 8:30 p.m.

Sat., 07.01 | Lorenzo Goetz & Brain Regiment @ Off Broadway

If you've read anything I've written the past year, you know how much I love Champaign's Lorenzo Goetz. (Enough to go to work for them in publicity, as a matter of fact.) Named best rock band in the C-U Music Awards for yet another year, these four guys deliver what I like to call thinking man's party music. It's feel-good and groove-inducing, yet also witty and self-referential. Lorenzo are opening for Brain Regiment, who themselves are opening for Dutch Henry. Brain Regiment are the unsung talent on our local scene, combining songwriting, talent, and stage presence (new keyboard player!) into the total package. Come out and show them both some love. | $5, 21+, 8 p.m.
