The M.E. gets all Springy with SXSW, Morrissey, and our fourth birthday.

Spring is here! We here at PLAYBACK:stl love spring. In fact, your fearless managing editor emerged from the womb on spring eve, intent on enjoying every single day of this most wonderful of seasons. As I write this, the flowers are pushing from their winter bunkers, providing splashes of color of fragrance, and we couldn’t be happier.

Also with spring comes the infamous start of the concert touring season. Rejoice! This month alone, hot on the heels of our record-breaking South by Southwest show tally (we are, of course, speculating into the future right now…but we are fairly confident in our stamina, not to mention our earplugs), we are anxiously awaiting more shows than we can mention: the Cribs, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Rhett Miller, Nine Black Alps, She Wants Revenge with Nightmare of You, Aloha, the Sounds with Lapush, the M’s

Add to that our weekly Tuesday night series at Cicero’s which—all modesty aside—features some pretty amazing local and touring acts; if you haven’t checked it out, consider yourself hereby invited. We’re there every week, with doors at 8:30 p.m.

And, last but not least, there’s the ever-fabulous PLAYBACK:stl anniversary show April 28 at The Pageant. We’re bringing in Lorenzo Goetz from Champaign, plus St. Louisans One Lone Car and Geoff Koch, and some very special guests. It’s all ages, so you’ve got no excuse. We promise an awesome night of music, fun, and giveaways; we’ll see you there.

Speaking of Lorenzo Goetz, the guys just returned from a weeklong tour and graciously agreed to share their tour diary and snapshots with us; check out the first installation (of many to come!) of “Band on the Run” on page 34.

Also debuting this month is Anne Valente’s new column, “The State I’m In.” Join Anne as she looks back at pivotal entertainment influences in her life—and relive your own memories of those times, as well.

We hope you’re finding PLAYBACK:stl in all the places you’d like it. As we continue to expand our national distribution, please drop us a line if you have a favorite record store or other venue where you’d like to see us for sale. PLAYBACK:stl is independently owned, and proudly so—which, of course, means we don’t have the big corporate dollars behind us for market research and promotion, so any suggestions or help in spreading the word are much appreciated.

Finally, we would be remiss were we not to mention that this month sees the return of Morrissey to the record-store shelves with Ringleader of the Tormentors. A new album from Moz is always reason to rejoice…and in the springtime? You can just feel the life forces gathering in you as you listen.

Join us next month for our wrap-up of the South by Southwest music and film festivals. And to find out just how close said M.E. got to touching Morrissey without getting arrested…
