The financial woes of the industry notwithstanding, 2008 was a great year for films, particularly if you like to get off the straight and narrow. I can’t remember when I’ve seen so many excellent documentaries released in one year, and there were many excellent foreign releases also. Films that I had to leave off the list because I haven’t seen them yet, but which I look forward to seeing in the near future, include Milk, Doubt, Frost/Nixon and Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired. There are also a number which appeared in festivals or on DVD and are the equal of those listed here, but are ineligible because they didn’t get a 2008 theatrical release in the U.S.: these include Skin, Kassim the Dream, Fuel, and Of Time and the City.
