Judging feature films and documentaries head-to-head makes me uncomfortable, so I’m following the lead of the New York Times Book Review and dividing my top ten list of films into two best-of lists: one for features (i.e., fiction) and one for documentaries (i.e., nonfiction).

Despite the prevailing pessimism circulating the interwebs declaring that “cinema is dead,” I think 2012 was a very good year for film.

Since last year's Top 10 list comprised video games my son kicked my ass at, I thought I'd focus on my five-year-old and his obsession with Fat Albert.

The last few years, for various reasons, I have not been able to attend nearly as many shows I would have loved to. This year, however, I was able to get in close to 15 (it really could have been 25). 2012 was just a jam-packed year of shows. In order, this is my list of the best five I attended.
