Starting off a series of Big Summer Shows, 105.7 The Point welcomed Panic! at the Disco and AWOLNATION to Hollywood Casino Amphitheater. With AWOLNATION headlining, Panic! took the stage first, and never disappoints. The band was in great form: tight and fantastically harmonic. Vocalist Brandon Urie still has his killer pipes, and wowed the audience with his vocal prowess. He even showed off his drumming skills.

With a simple name-bearing backdrop, the band let the music do the talking. Playing tracks from all four of their albums, the song selection was great. Fan favorites like “The Ballad of Mona Lisa,” “Ready to Go,” and “Miss Jackson” made the crowd scream with delight. From their beginnings on MySpace to headlining festivals, they have a very loyal fan base. With a new album in the works, Panic! shows no sign of slowing down.

The audience even got a rare treat when the band broke into Queen hit, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and it was sweet. Along with a verse and chorus of Journey’s “Any Way You Want It,” the show was packed with energy.

Headlining the show was Southern California band AWOLNATION, touring in support of their second full-length album, Run. The show contained a vivid light show, yet the music was mundane and noisy. It was obvious that most members of the crowd were Panic! fans. It seemed the band was just a step off, while musically, the live sound was distorted and bass-heavy.

New bands like AWOL have much to learn before they headline their own tour. If not for the addition of Panic! at the Disco, I doubt so many tickets would have sold.

The show was also supported by Jack’s Mannequin singer Andrew McMahon and the Wilderness coming off a strong release in 2014, as well as Cold War Kids, who have once again hit gold with their latest single “First” off 2014 album Hold My Home. | Marc Farr
