The Pageant, St. Louis

The holiday season would not be complete in St. Louis without our annual string of shows from the area’s premiere Pink Floyd tribute band, El Monstero. Although we were treated to a rare outdoor performance last summer, this was a new show; here we had with lasers, smoke, and onstage character performances based on Pink Floyd’s epic release, The Wall.

The band—which is composed of members of several St. Louis area acts, including Joe Dirt and The Incurables—focused on the David Gilmore/Roger Waters era of Floyd. Originating in 1999, El Monstero has gained an impeccable reputation, and several sold out shows at The Pageant this month are proof. This band is good—very good. Never before have I experienced such a level of talent in a tribute band. Yet, one must hold a certain level of musicianship in order to deliver the goods when it comes to an act such as Pink Floyd.

As the show opened with “Run like Hell,” Nazi-inspired soldiers took the stage with handheld flood lights as the band blasted into the track. Lead vocalist Mark Thomas Quinn (Joe Dirt, Celebration Day), clad in black boots and the signature double-hammer logo emblazoned on his upper arm, was in great voice, and delivered an impeccable performance. Stunning visuals were projected onto two round screens, and female pole dancers filled out the stage.

Playing some of the most beloved Pink Floyd tunes, the band delivered classics like “Mother,” “Goodbye Blue Sky,” “Another Brick in the Wall Part1 and 2,”and “Wish You Were Here.” Sharing the vocals was Jimmy Griffin (The Incurables, Celebration Day), and he did a beautiful job. El Monstero is among the highest caliber of tribute bands, and its members obviously enjoy what they do.

On the road, the band will be playing Kansas City, as well as Springfield, Mo., in January. | Marc Farr
