Black Lips | 8.4.11

The Black Lips are still the obscene rockers that publicly urinate on stage and write about drugs and trash.

What do you get when you mix the Flaming Lips and Black Flag? The psychedelic punk sound of The Black Lips and their reputable stage theatrics. How fitting that they share a name with a portion of each of the respected innovators.

The rowdy garage rockers have moved out of their sloppy lo-fi punk rock sound with new release of the Arabia Mountain. The new retro garage-pop sound combined with amped psychedelic progression takes the Black Lips to a level of sophistication and awards them a new demographic.

The landing of this new genre has awarded them a cover story for Spin Magazine, a song on a Universal film and placement in a Virgin Mobile commerical. We’re not talking about selling out here, the band assures old fans that they have yet to compromise who they are. The Black Lips are still the obscene rockers that publicly urinate on stage and write about drugs and trash.

While public urination and vomiting are just a few of the band’s staple antics, they’ve also known to create a light show with both flaming guitars and blinding strobe lights. Each tour brings something just a little more shocking. So fans, avoid any perceived notions of what is to be expect because the Black Lips are known to keeping you guessing. | Kelly Glueck

The Black Lips are playing Thursday, August 4 at the Firebird.
