My crush on lead singer Ed Robertson has grown to epic proportions.

Peabody Opera House, St. Louis

A quick apology to the opening act for the Barenaked Ladies last week at the Peabody. I can’t remember your name. I can remember how great your set was, however, and how I wished you’d had more time to play. Well done, Mysterious Stranger.

As for the main event, Barenaked Ladies did not disappoint. These guys are hardcore silly. I’ve been listening to the band since Gordon, their first album, was released in the early ’90s, and I’d heard stories about the jokes and spontaneous rapping that occurred during these shows. I was not prepared, however, for a mashup of “I Saw the Sign” and a pretty tight rap about St. Louis. I couldn’t breathe for laughing. My crush on lead singer Ed Robertson has grown to epic proportions.

They have a new album out with the band The Persuasions; the album itself is rich and beautiful. BNL has this habit of cracking you up with one track, and then breaking your heart with the next. The playlist was as full of old favorites as new songs, and the audience stayed with them, even when we didn’t know the words.

There were a lot of singalong opportunities, though. One of my favorite lines from the night was “They sing with all their hearts and we reward them with the banjo. If they don’t sing? They get the accordion.”

The light show was fantastic and didn’t distract from the music, and each musician on the stage was clearly in love with their instruments. Drummer Tyler Stewart ended the show with an outstanding cover of TLC’s “No Scrubs” and some fairly suggestive grinding from the band…on each other.

I might have waited 20 years for my first Barenaked Ladies concert. I’ll tell you this, though: I’ll never miss another.| Melissa Cynova
