The Gramophone, St. Louis

Ahead of her latest release, Waving Wild, Arum Rae, aka White Dress, played a show in St. Louis in the colorful Grove neighborhood. She created a striking appearance in a bright red skirt and her bright red guitar, the one made famous by Jack White. Unlike on her previous EP, this show was mostly played on instruments and synths were largely ignored, save some well-timed triggers. The drummer played on a very simple two-piece kit. He only had a snare, a bass drum, a ride, and a high hat, but with what would have seemed like an obvious handicap was never that. He created a big and full sound.

Rae’s guitar work was sparse throughout her spirited show, but well-timed and beautiful. From time to time she’d shuffle off her demure playing into wild frolicking. Rae never slowed, never complained about the lack of attendance, but seemed honored that people were there for her music. During her entire show, she danced while she played. Though the crowd was small, the music was huge. Everyone who wasn’t there missed out on something special. | Nik Cameron
