Socialburn: Where You Are (Elektra)

| Print |

Almost every song is a well-written composition that is heavy enough to be heard on a station like the Point, yet mainstream enough to be part of the playlist on a station like the River.

Just when you thought that the world had enough middle-of-the-road alternative rock bands, here comes yet another. Socialburn is a young, fresh-out-of-high-school group who come from a small town outside of Tallahassee. Longtime friends from school, they decided to form a band after a night of singing and playing guitars around a campfire. Not too long after that decision was made, their debut release, entitled Where You Are, was completed, and the four members of Socialburn found themselves on the fast track to national recognition, complete with an award for the “unknown band of the month” on the Alternative Addiction Web site.
Their sound is well-exemplified on the first single, “Down,” which, like most of the disc’s 12 tracks, contains a well-mixed blend of crunchy rhythms and catchy power-pop melodies. Almost every song is a well-written composition that is heavy enough to be heard on a station like the Point, yet mainstream enough to be part of the playlist on a station like the River. According to the band’s bio, their influences are drawn from such diverse influences as Merle Haggard, Ween, and Slipknot, even though their music barely resembles any of those artists. If a comparison had to be made, it would definitely be with the bands Fuel and Puddle of Mudd, both musically and vocally. Their producer, John Kurzweg, who has worked with both Creed and Puddle of Mudd, was probably a contributing factor to that similarity.
Where You Are’s liner notes contain the line “We are a band today, and we will be a band tomorrow,” which clearly indicates the fact that Socialburn, unlike many of today’s disposable, one-hit-wonder groups, is in it for the long haul. Guess time will tell how accurate a statement that actually turns out to be. See their Web site: www.socialburn.com.
