The Charlatans UK | Simpatico (Sanctuary)

| Print |

Simpatico delves into various genres of music from track to track. This makes the record a little less accessible on the first few listens, but with a little persistence, Simpatico reveals much originality and creativeness in the song arrangements.

Lost amid a growing collection of British bands, the Charlatans slipped into the darkness of a dusty crate. “The Only One I Know” or “Can’t Get Out of Bed” popped up from time to time, but the once-crisp band became a little stale.

Returning from a five-year hiatus with Simpatico, their eighth full-length disc, the Charlatans UK have created a solid piece of music. “Blackened Blue Eyes,” the new single and opening track, packs a wallop, reminding old fans of just how great this band can be.

In 1989, the Charlatans were forged in Manchester, England, The band soon became a driving force in British music throughout the 1990s. As with any quality rock band, their sound changed and grew with time. The Charlatans moved from a classic pop style to a combination of sounds ranging from funk to reggae/ska. Simpatico delves into various genres of music from track to track. This makes the record a little less accessible on the first few listens, but with a little persistence, Simpatico reveals much originality and creativeness in the song arrangements.

“When the Lights Go Out in London” is a solid morsel of British pop candy. With fun synth effects and a catchy chorus, it seems a likely choice for a follow-up single. Creepy ghost “woo”s vibrate throughout “The Architect.” The piano accompaniment with the synth makes for interesting melodies. With fun lyrics like “Rockers all over the world reunite/in love with the demon that comes with the night,” “The Architect” is a unique tune.

“Glory Glory” is a simple, soft song. The guitars float in and out with beautiful notes. The Charlatans have a knack for the classic British melody and can remind one of the Beatles with a touch of melancholy. “For Your Entertainment” is also of note for its weird lyrics and funky guitars. Finally, “Sunset and Vine” forms a cool instrumental-only vibe with twinkling sounds on the keys. This ends the record with a rather hopeful feeling. Truly, the world seems nicer after grooving to Simpatico.
