it's all right to be a singer
but don't you love a singer
whatever you do."

The Long Winters' most recent release, Putting the Days to Bed (their third), was an indie rock fan's dream: crisp, straightforward, ever-so-alt-country-tinged pop songs, intelligent, intricate lyrics, and John Roderick's everyman's vocals. One listen to "Fire Island" is all it takes; if you don't believe me, hunt it down on the band's MySpace page and tell me you're not instantly addicted.
Though I'm not usually one to lift copy verbatim from a band's website, in this case, I couldn't help myself: "John Roderick writes songs that make you feel like you've been talking to someone really interesting in an airport for the last hour and, although you know you'll never see them again, you just told them your whole life story and a part of you will love them forever."
Opening the show are Stars of Track and Field, who are rather Elbow-esque in their songwriting and presentation. It should be a great night of music, indeed. | Laura Hamlett
