prev_segerBob Seger. Bobby S. The Seeg. Whatever you want to call him, he’s back after a hiatus of more than a decade from touring, along with his ever-famous backing band of nearly 40 years, the Silver Bullet Band.

Seger, whose vocal rasp is right up there with Louis Armstrong and Tom Waits, is touring in support of his latest studio effort Face the Promise. While his new album is a return to the formula that has served the veteran rocker well over the past decade, most fans will still be holding on to those glory days of yesteryear when such mega-hits as “Katmandu,” “Turn the Page,” “Night Moves,” and “Old Time Rock ’n’ Roll” ruled the airwaves. And judging from recent set lists, they won’t be disappointed. The Detroit rocker is known for an energetic live show, and despite his music mellowing a bit over the last few years, Seger still does what he does, and he does it well.

There are few artists that embody pure rock ’n’ roll soul anymore, but Seger and Co. seem to fit the bill. As usual, they are more focused on the music than anything else—it was never about image with the SBB. And while the number of grey hairs sported by band members has increased tenfold, so has the band’s confidence in their music. There are few bands that aging baby-boomers and their kids can enjoy together, but Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band were lucky enough to hit it big at a time that has allowed them a unique crossover success.

While some younger hipsters today might consider Bob Seger passé, what they have to remember is that without him, their parents would never have had that slow dance to “Main Street” at prom, which led to a heavy petting session in the back seat of a ’60 Chevy, which led to said hipster’s existence. | Tyson Blanquart
